Substance Use Prevention SEL & Bullying Prevention

Too Good for Drugs & A Peaceable Place - Grade 2

Too Good for Drugs & A Peaceable Place in Grade 2 builds a foundation for healthy living through fun and interactive learning of essential social skills including setting reachable goals, communicating effectively, and making responsible decisions.  The program focuses on developing students’ character development skills and reinforces those skills through interactive, social activities.

This bundle of Too Good for Drugs and A Peaceable Place includes all three lesson units for Grade 2 including the core Self-efficacy and Interpersonal Skills Development Unit, Substance Use Prevention Unit, and Violence Prevention Unit in a single 15 lesson adaptation.

Second graders meet Wagner and his cast of furry friends as they discover how to set reachable goals and make responsible decisions.  Students go on a scavenger hunt to find classmates who respond to their emotions in healthy ways, use I-messages to help Wagner communicate assertively, and practice their active listening skills with their Listen Up Pups.

Students help Wagner manage peer pressure from his classmates and learn strategies for refusing the pressure.  With the help of their band of healthy superheroes they learn to handle mistakes in healthy ways.  Students help Wagner’s friends learn about the safe use prescription and over-the-counter medications and help Wagner make healthy choices so he can make it to hockey practice before he runs out of energy.

Children learn social and anger management skills including how to get to know others, resolve conflict peacefully, and  help Wagner learn to treat others with care, kindness, and respect in order to stay on the path to a peaceable place.  With the help of their classmates and friends, they learn to manage frustration and work together find multiple ways to solve problems.

Daily Workouts, Home Workouts, and cross-curricular activities follow each lesson so students can practice and apply the concepts developed in each lesson at home and with their peers.

This curriculum kit includes lesson activity materials for classrooms of up to 30 students.

Understanding the Logic Model

The Mendez Foundation developed Logic Models for Too Good to map out the Theory of Change and demonstrate graphically the assumptions that drive Too Good. The logic model communicates an "if-then" message of what changes the program intends to produce. It helps to make the connections among the target group, goals, strategies, objectives and planned program results and lays out what the program is expected to achieve and how it is expected to work.

Research Design

Each of the Too Good evaluation studies were conducted by third-party researchers and used randomized treatment-control group designs (pre-test/post-test, 20-week post-test, or one-year follow-up). The Researchers examined pre-test equivalence between treatment and control groups; potential bias of loss of student data over time; quality of program implementation; and estimates of reliability and validity of assessment tools.

The award-winning Too Good programs have undergone rigorous, independent evaluation studies to measure their effects on students' skills, attitudes, intentions, and behaviors. Studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national evaluation conferences. These studies demonstrate the effectiveness of Too Good.
