Seeds of Nutrition is a universal nutrition education program that teaches character-based skills, attitudes, and behaviors to help elementary students differentiate feelings and actions, encourage respect between peers, and set and achieve personal health goals.
Seeds of Nutrition teaches the following self-efficacy and interpersonal skills which foster healthy development and academic success:
Seeds of Nutrition targets the risk factors associated with poor nutrition that can be positively affected in the classroom:
Seeds of Nutrition builds protection within the student to promote healthy eating and exercise by:
The logic model for Seeds of Nutrition maps out the Theory of Change and
demonstrates graphically the assumptions that drive the learning and behavior change in the curriculum.
The logic model communicates an "if-then" message of what changes the program intends to produce. It helps
to make the connections among the target group, goals, strategies, objectives and planned program results
and lays out what the program is expected to achieve and how it is expected to work.

The theoretical foundation of Seeds of Nutrition includes elements of the Social Learning Theory
(Bandura), Problem Behavior Theory (Jessor), and the Social Development Model (Hawkins et al.).
The 40 Developmental Assets (Search Institute) also contribute to the theory on which the
program is based.
The Social Learning Theory states that behavior is shaped through modeling or observing behaviors
and reinforcement or experiencing positive consequences for behaviors.
Problem Behavior Theory posits that efforts to change behavior may focus on any or all of the
following levels: behavior, personality, and environment.
The Social Development Model posits behavior change occurs when individuals gain
information about the risks and benefits of certain behaviors, form attitudes based on that
information, and learn behavioral skills. In order for students to adopt healthy behavior, they
must not only learn the skills, but also adopt positive norms and bond with positive institutions
and individuals. Bonding results from having opportunities to participate, skills for participation,
and recognition for involvement. Effective prevention requires coordination between the school,
family, and community environments.
